If you haven’t had a chance to see it I recommend reading a recent article in Nature looking at the Japanese robotics industry. Japan began as an acknowledged leader in Robotics but underinvestment in AI and a lack of focus has seen the country lose its edge. Countries like South Korea, with clear strategies around AI and robotics have taken a clear lead in the space. Japan is now looking at how to recover.
The parallels with Australia seem clear. Once acknowledged as a clear leader in field robotics for many years, Australia have underinvested in AI for the last decade while other countries are forging ahead. There are some important lessons to be learned from Japan’s experience.
